Festa do Boi (Ox Festival)

In the XIV century, the Christian population lived in town, while the Jewish colony lived out walls, in Santo Estevo neighbourhood. They lived combining their economic dynamism with the Christian harassment due to the Christian pre-eminence in town. Every year, when Christians celebrated their Corpus festivity and crossed walls to arrive at the Convent, Jewish took advantage of that fact and tried to boycott Christian’s procession crying out and insulting them. Chroniclers tell that Xan de Arzúa, an Allariz’s nobleman with a strong faith, decided to put an end to the situation. In 1317, during the procession, Xan de Arzúa got on an ox carrying some sacks of ants. When Jewish started to boycott the act, he frightened off them with ants and thrusts, making Jewish disappear forever.

Since then and until 1936, every year in Corpus, the Ox came out to run around Allariz. During the war, this tradition was cancelled, and it was slowly revived until it disappeared once and for all by the end of the 50’s and beginning of the 60’s. Since that, as Antonio Blanco says, “Ox lies hidden in Allariz people’s heart” until in 1983 a group of young people decided to recover the festival. Again, Ox comes back to run around Allariz and, with it, a village proud of its history and traditions.
